Flashback Week 12 - NUH Fetal Care Centre
There is nothing much to blog about this day because the next two days would be the days that would shake my faith.
We found a secluded corner to sit and waited. My name was called and a sonographer guided us into the scanning room. I mustered all my faith and wished for all these nonsense to stop. I visualised with all my might that the baby's NT was normal and the oedema was gone. Please tell us that our baby is fine. Please ...
The sonographer would excel in one game - Poker. She had such a poker face when she was scanning. She was cold and clinical. We could see the monitors clearly and I was so amazed with NUH scanners. They were definitely clearer. I could see clearly that the baby had a hump like looking thing on his neck and bouncing around. I knew something was wrong but I never expect this ...
Never ever ...
Because we could see what the sonographer was doing, she typed 7.7mm under NT. My heart went cold. Instead of NT becoming smaller, it jumped to 7.7mm.
"Nurse, the neck is so thick?"
"Yes, it is," she replied.
She repeated the scans and there was no miracle. Finally, I met the legendary Prof Biswas face to face. He came into the room and scanned again. He scanned the heart for quite a long time. Again, I prayed for a miracle. Again, there was none.
"Sophia, your baby's neck is thick. Let's do a CVS tomorrow. CVS will help us to rule out chromosomes abnormality. If the results are normal, we will then look for heart defects," Prof informed me kindly. When he wished to put a point across, I noticed he would address the patient by her name.
He was professional, stern but I could feel his sincerity and warmth.
NUH gave us a printed paper that stated the diagnosis. My heart froze. Initially, I thought it was bad enough that the results of NT were worse than expected, I saw - NT 7.7mm, Cystic Hygroma, Skin edema on chest and abdomen, Absent Nasal Bridge. All these are very strong indicators of abnormal chromosomes. I felt very strongly that Dr Fong did not make a wrong diagnosis - he just wanted to make me feel better. 7.7mm must be referring to the disastrous measurement that he wanted so much to be just the membrane but it turned out that it was the NT after all.
P.S. By the way, I think I know why the monographer had a poker face. Because on the printed diagnosis, I saw that the sonographer was a Doctor not a Nurse.
