Cure for elevated NK cells affecting pregnancy
Today I am in a better place so I shall talk about something that is positive!
For those who have been following my blog since Day 1, you will remember that Dr Mahesh has diagnosed me to have high NK cells - 18% which is 6% higher than the acceptable range. I guess I have been avoiding the topic for a year so it did not occur to me to find out apart from IVIG, the other methods that could help too. Recently, through forums, I learnt that Intralipids is different from IVIG. I know, I know that I am suaku. But whenever I heard drips, I thought they refer to the same thing but NO NO NO. Intralipids is made up fatty acids from soy bean oil, egg yolk, glycerin and water. Check this article out.

This article explains what glycerin is.http://www.livestrong.com/article/327146-sources-of-glycerine/
Basically, it is oil derived from vegetables.
Then IVIG is IgG derived from a thousand of blood donors. Just hearing it scares the shit out of me. Very gross to receive blood from so many people but Intralipids sounds so much more natural and less harmful than IVIG but my hub says that it is still very detrimental to pump your body with so much fatty acids.
Anyway, how about other methods apart from medical interventions?
Surprisingly the top result that Mr Google shared with me was FISH OIL - something which I have been taking because of my asthma. Fish oil is believed to lower NK cells. Hmm, then does it mean that cancer patients should avoid fish oil since they need NK cells?
The following post from Fertilethoughts is great. It explains that you need 720mg of EPA in fish oil to lower NK cells and it is best to consume VITAMIN E together with fish oil for better effects. http://www.fertilethoughts.com/forums/immune-issues/710721-immunology-dr-beers-testing-ivig-explained-fish-oil-info.html
It encourages us to take natural sources of Vitamin E and recommends 100 iu to 400 in daily. I found some natural sources of Vitamin E from this article - http://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/vitamin-E.php
Tofu, cooked spinach, Almonds, roasted sunflower seeds, fish (rainbow trout), shrimp, olive oil, broccoli, pumpkin.
Additional sources from another article http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/vitamin-e-foods/
hazelnuts, pinenuts, avocado, plant oils like wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, parsley and papaya.
Talking about Vitamin E took me back to the TCM clinic in Queensway when Physician Hong MC passed me a packet of Vit E to take to prevent miscarriages. At that time, I stared at the bright red transparent capsules and I have no faith at all. Maybe she makes sense after all.
And guess what? I also found another article that says that UNMETABOLISED folic acid would lower NK cells. No wonder Prof Mahesh asked me to eat two 5mg folic acid which is 10 000 mcg and the rec dosage commonly for pregnant ladies is only 400mcg. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16365081 Basically this article is saying that in order to lower NK cells, you have to take a folate rich diet and on top of that, take FA supplements. So what makes a folate rich diet? Beans, lentils, oranges, raw spinach, wheat bread, papaya. http://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/foods-high-in-folate-vitamin-B9.php
Other food includes dark leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, citrus fruits, beans, peas, lentils, avocado, lady's fingers, brussels sprouts, seeds and nuts, cauliflower, beets, corn, celery, and carrots!http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/folic-acid-foods/
Can't wait to go supermarket to stock up my fridge!
P.S. The only thing against fish oil is that if you take fish oil plus some other blood thinning medications, it might cause spotting during pregnancy.
