Fruitlessness yet I will rejoice in the Lord

What inspired me to write this post was a friend sharing a verse from Habakkuk (a book in the bible), not specifically for me, but with us, as a general encouragement. I find it so applicable in my situation, speaking to my heart.
Habakkuk 3:17-19
17 Though the fig tree does not bud
    and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
    and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
    and no cattle in the stalls,
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
    I will be joyful in God my Savior.
19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;
    he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
    he enables me to tread on the heights.

In verse 17, it is about fruitlessness. Even though there is no fruit in the marriage, no fruit despite all that has been done, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. What does it mean to rejoice in the Lord? I tried searching many websites to explain what it means to rejoice in the Lord, I was not satisfied because most of them talk about having positive attitude blah blah blah, sounds like fei hua, because everyone knows that we should always seek to be contented, joyful but it is sometimes impossible. For example, if we were to say, rejoice in your victory, means you are happy over something that you have won; rejoice in your achievements, means you are happy over something you have done. So, we need to define what is The Lord since the verse asks us to rejoice in The Lord. The Lord refers to Jesus who has died on the cross to wash away our sins so that we can be with God and start afresh, not bonded to the past. I think rejoice in The Lord just means that be happy in the fact that you have Jesus in your life. So what? The answer is in Verse 19 - Be happy because The Lord is our strength because in times of trouble, HE WILL make my feet like a deer. I went to find out what is the big deal about the deer's feet. http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/hunting-fishing/2010/11/21/Hooves-make-everything-deer-do-possible/stories/201011210217

In the face of challenges, when we fall and feel crushed, God will make our feet like the deer - cushioned. We will not fall and be defeated, but we will always be able to spring upwards.

  1. He keeps our tears in a bottle and knows about our sorrows. Continue to draw strength from Him. Stay hopeful!
